Capital, Soča Alps & the Adriatic — a Slovenia Grand Tour

A castle above the old town you ride a funicular up to, a fairy-tale church on an island you row to, an electric train deep into a cave, then the emerald Soča Valley over a 50-hairpin alpine pass, river rafting and WWI history — and finish on a Venetian stone town on the sea. Three bases, one small country: capital → alps → coast, in cool air made for Brandie. The flights to Venice are booked — and here are three ways to do the Slovenia middle, shown side by side below: drive the whole loop, trade a Venice night for an extra beach day, or start car-free by bus & train and rent only for the mountains and coast.

✅ Booked: Aug 22–30, 2026 · cool (~73°F), low crowds, every leg seated & gentle on POTS.

Three ways to do the Slovenia middle — all from the same booked Venice flights. You fly into Venice, water-bus in, and top-and-tail the loop with Venetian nights either way; what changes is how you cross Slovenia. Option 1 drives the whole loop from Venice. Option 2 trades a Venice night for an extra Adriatic beach day (the most Slovenia + coast time). Option 3 starts car-free — bus to Ljubljana, capital + Bled by train & bus (beers, zero driving for Brandie's POTS), then rent the car only for the western mountains and coast. Every option lands the same country — capital, high alps, and sea — for two adults; they differ by ~$140 in land cost.

The same start for all three
Day 1Sat · Aug 22 · Fly out Overnight hop to Venice

Evening departure — an overnight flight across the Atlantic to Venice (VCE). Sleep on the plane; land ready to go. 🌡 78°/62°

Day 2Sun · Aug 23 · Arrive Venice 🚤 Arrive Venice — glide in by water

Land at Venice (VCE), then the Alilaguna water bus glides you into the city (~€15/pp — a gorgeous way to arrive, no car). Venice on foot: St Mark's Square, the Rialto, the canals and back-lanes, gelato in hand — plus an optional evening gondola and a vaporetto hop to Murano or Burano. 🛏 Venice (✅ booked — Hampton Isola Nuova, €153/2nt · free breakfast · refundable to Aug 22)

🛶 Full day in Venice — private gondola 🎫 Your late-summer dates are past the Venice day-tripper-fee season — nothing to pay or register; overnight guests are exempt anyway.
A slow Venice day before the loop begins — no car yet. The private gondola (~€90, ~30 min) threads the quiet inner canals away from the Grand Canal crowds; St Mark's Basilica is free to enter (small fee for the terrace and Pala d'Oro), and the Doge's Palace is the grand set-piece. Save the Murano/Burano vaporetto run for the afternoon if you have the energy. Tonight's the cancelable 2nd Venice night — Option 2 trades it for an extra beach day.

⚠️ Amex / Chase heads-up: both flights went on Amex, so the two $500 Chase United Explorer credits haven't triggered yet — put your Venice hotel, the rental car, and trip meals on the new Explorer cards (one each) to bank the $1,000. Brandie's United credit is now fully used ($1,138 ticket + $86 toward seats = $1,224.73, $0 left). Both fares are changeable (class T) + priority boarding — dates can still move if Brandie's surgery shifts. Flights booked: Roby conf O92Z8T ($1,138 ticket + $110 seats = $1,248), Brandie conf OVVC6K ($0 ticket on credit + $34 seats).

Hotels

Three bases, in the natural flow of the trip: 3 nights at the DoubleTree by Hilton Ljubljana (~€133/$143) for the capital + transit day-trips, 2 nights in a Bovec guesthouse (~€100/$110) for the Soča Valley, and 2 nights on the Piran coast (~€140/$150). Only Ljubljana has a Hilton — Bovec and Piran are lovely independents (no Go Hilton discount there), which is the trade for reaching the alps and the sea.

Two hotel moves total (Ljubljana → Bovec → Piran) — more than the unpack-once single-base week, but each move is a short seated drive and lands you somewhere completely different. Book the DoubleTree early — it's the one Hilton in the country and fills up.

Getting around

Ljubljana by train & bus — no car for the first three days. The city old town is tiny, flat and car-free, and Bled + Postojna are both easy seated ~1h train/bus day-trips. Pick the rental car up on Day 5 for the Soča + coast legs — you'll want it, because the Soča Valley and the Vršič Pass have almost no public transit, so the car is essential there and for the drive down to Piran. Drop it at the airport (LJU) on the way home.

The driving is short and scenic: Ljubljana → Bovec over Vršič ~2h15, Bovec → Piran ~3h, Piran → LJU ~1h30 — all seated, with the epic hairpin pass being a windshield spectacle rather than any exertion. Reserve an automatic (manuals dominate); buy the vignette (~€16/week) before the highway; parking's easy outside the old-town cores (park outside Piran's walls and walk in flat).

Weather & Brandie's POTS

✅ Very favorable. Late-August highs ~72–75°F and lows ~52–55°F in the alpine north, a touch warmer (~76–78°F) on the coast, low humidity — no heat, exactly what POTS wants. Mornings are crisp; pack a light layer.

Every leg is seated and gentle. Flat car-free walks in the old towns, a seated electric cave train at Postojna, a rowed pletna boat to Bled island (no climb), funiculars up to the castles, and scenic drives where the car does the work. Pace the days, plenty of sit-down breaks — nothing on the plan needs stamina.

Why Slovenia

Prices are 2026 estimates for two adults (Slovenia is on the euro, €1 ≈ $1.08) — verify independent-hotel rates in Bovec & Piran when you book.
